Medpin works in several different ways to help get medicines and other health care to people in need. Medpin's small staff is assisted by a number of people in key positions and with special expertise regarding safety net providers, pharmaceuticals, pharmacists and pharmacies, and academic research.

Medicine for People in Need (Medpin) works with safety net providers to improve access to medicine and pharmaceutical care for people in need.

Training and Education

Medpin offers opportunities for safety net providers to become more informed about pharmaceutical care and management strategies.

  • Teleworkshops offer accessible late-breaking information on pharmacy management issues The interactive workshops allow clinicians to ask questions of pharmacy experts and problem-solve with their colleagues without leaving their offices.
  • Conferences in the Western U.S. region offer in-person information and leadership development for pharmacists, clinicians, administrators, and policy makers.
  • Rx for Access website contains archived material from twelve issues of a national publication developed jointly by Medpin and Volunteers in Health Care, and hosts other information of interest to safety net providers across the U.S. seeking information to improve the cost-effectiveness and value of their pharmacy-related activities. www.rxforaccess.org.
  • Training manuals provide information and tools for safety net decision-makers to implement or expand cost-effective pharmacy services.

Medpin also works with pharmacists interested in working on a full-time or consulting basis to safety net clinics, clinics assessing their pharmacy-related resources and needs, and safety net clinics contracting with retail pharmacies to dispense 340B drugs.

Direct Services

Medpin provides direct technical assistance to California community clinics and county health systems on medication access issues, including strategies to lower total drug spending and improve compliance with medication management requirements. It convenes the California Safety Net Alliance for Pharmacy and Therapeutics Support (CalSNAPTS) to support local P& T and pharmacy-related activities of safety net providers. This innovative effort provides drug class reviews and clinical care guidelines designed specifically for safety net providers in California.

Policy Analysis

Medpin helps nonprofit organizations and public officials stay informed on selected federal and state laws, including proposed legislative and regulatory changes. The primary focus is on drug pricing and access issues with major impact on publicly financed and uninsured patients.

Research

Medpin works with university faculty and national experts from pharmacy, medicine, law, and business to partner on research concerning drug cost and access for vulnerable patients. Research topics include the use of pharmaceutical companies' patient assistance programs, the comparative efficacy of drugs within a single therapeutic class, the federal 340B discount law and related drug-pricing methodologies affecting public and nonprofit entities, an economic analysis of different county health systems' indigent drug expenditures, and the use of medications for chronic disease management.

Medpin, a program of the nonprofit Public Health Institute, is supported by the California HealthCare Foundation (www.chcf.org), The California Endowment (www.calendow.org), The California Wellness Foundation (www.tcwf.org), and Kaiser Permanente. Medpin works with community clinics, county health systems, pharmacies, universities, government, and other organizations that share the program's mission.
