Many California clinics were able to obtain brand-name drugs at no charge through Medpin's Drug Distribution Project (DDP). Now, Medpin's High Value Medications Project supports the purchase and "best practices" prescribing of selected generic medications and related medical supplies by California clinics serving low-income patients.

Other, ongoing sources of drugs available at no charge to eligible low income patients:
(1) Drug samples provided by local drug company sales' representatives or perhaps indirectly by physician donation;
(2) Nationally-operated patient assistance programs (PAPs) offered by many drug companies;
(3) Drugs dispensed at no charge by selected hospitals or clinics through "institutional PAPs" those providers have negotiated with interested drug companies.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each source of "free drugs," depending on a clinic's patient mix, clinician resources and pharmacy management capabilities.
