Funded by the California HealthCare Foundation,
Medpin worked with faculty from the University of California at Berkeley
Haas School of Business and the University of California at San Francisco
School of Pharmacy to study pharmaceutical companies' patient assistance
programs (PAPs). This study examined the use and assessment of these
programs by key staff at safety net clinics in California and four
other states: Texas, Florida, Oregon, and Illinois. Preliminary study
findings have been presented at meetings of the National Conference
of State Legislatures and California Health Advocates (a nonprofit
that supports the work of California's Health Insurance Counseling
and Advocacy Program (HICAP) projects), and the Center for Business
Intelligence Annual Conference on Patient Assistance Programs.
The study's findings are expected to be published in the American
Journal of Health-System Pharmacists in March 2005.
